Jake Ryan – A Year of Achievement and Growth

We are proud to share an update from Jake Ryan, talented cellist and Cherubim Awardee, who plays the Alexander Smillie Cello from the Trust’s instrument collection.

Jake has just completed his final recital exam at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, marking the culmination of his full-time postgraduate course. His journey continues next year as he returns on the part-time Personal Study Plan (PSP)course, which will allow him greater flexibility to focus on teaching, professional engagements, and further development in historical performance.

In recognition of his contributions throughout the academic year, Jake has been awarded the prestigious RBC Pedagogy Prize for Postgraduates, celebrating his outstanding commitment to music education and community engagement.

As well as excelling in his studies, Jake continues to make a meaningful impact through his teaching, delivering whole-class cello instruction to Year 2 and Year 3 pupils via the In Harmony programme – a vital initiative that brings music into the heart of local communities.

Looking ahead, Jake’s summer will include:

  • Performing as solo cellist in RBC’s summer opera production of Dido and Aeneas

  • A return to the St Andrews Baroque Course, deepening his expertise in period performance

  • Ongoing development as a performer and educator through the PSP course

We are delighted to support Jake’s artistic journey and are proud that the Alexander Smillie Cello continues to play a part in his evolving musical voice.

Congratulations, Jake, on an inspiring year of achievement!
