Kieran Carter

Rothermere Cello

Kieran Carter is a London based cellist who studied at Junior Trinity before starting his undergraduate degree at the Royal College of Music, where he is currently in his fourth year studying with Melissa Phelps. He plays in the RCM String Orchestra, Philharmonic Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra, with a highlight of being principal Cello in Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe under Bernard Haitink, as well as being conducted by Vladimir Jurowski, Thomas Zehetmair, Nicholas Collon, John Wilson, Maxim Vengerov. Away from college he has also been invited to play principal Cello in orchestras around London such as the London Firebird Orchestra, the Arch Sinfonia, Orion Orchestra, Janus Ensemble and the Kantanti Ensemble.

Kieran loves to play chamber music, with highlights including performing in the newly founded Uppingham International Music Festival, playing alongside the Sacconi Quartet at their festival in Folkestone, a performance of Mendelssohn’s Octet at RCM with Thomas Zehetmair and most recently the Maiastra String Quartet courses. As a soloist Kieran has played concerti with the West Sussex County Youth Orchestra, the Junior Trinity Symphony Orchestra, the Lewes Concert Orchestra and most recently Dvorak’s Cello Concerto with the Dartmouth Festival Orchestra. He has also given solo recitals in London, and looks forward to performing Haydn’s Second Cello Concerto with the Horsham Symphony Orchestra in March 2018.


Kieran has taken part in masterclasses and had coaching with David Takeno, Thomas Carroll, Natalie Clein, Leonard Elschenbroich and Johannes Goritzki. He plays on a 19th century Colin Mezin Cello kindly on loan from the Cherubim Music Trust, and a Matthew Coltman bow from the RCM.
