Mathew Curtis

Mathew began playing the saxophone at the age of 12; now 12 years later he is in his final year at Trinity College of Music, studying with Simon Stewart. His recent achievements include being a finalist in the CASS Young Saxophonist Competition, Principal Saxophonist of the National Youth Wind Orchestra (2000–2002) and performing, along with the other members of the quartet, at the 8th British Saxophone Congress in Cardiff.

Most recently he has been made Principal Sopranino/soprano Saxophonist with the National Saxophone Choir.

Mathew writes:
"All saxophonists have to be multi-instrumentalists. I really need, (ideally) a pair of wooden clarinets, as well as continuing to expand my range of saxophones (I currently have a Sopranino, Soprano and an Alto) to include Tenor and Baritone, I am in need of upgrading my current Sopranino.

"The Selmer Sopranino can be considered as the professional model, but its price was greater than I could afford. With my new current position and the need to continuously go higher (in pitch) with the added pressure of needing to be spot on with intonation, a better instrument would enable me to do this more effectively.

"I do hope to become a professional musician - hence the need for all my doubling skills (and the associated instruments!). With no financial backing from either of my parents, this task is proving a difficult one for me. Many thanks, Mathew Curtis."
